Why We Built An Ad-Free Gaming Platform
Meshcaid didn't start with a pitch deck or a business plan. It started with a group of people who were tired of watching sandbox platforms cut corners.
Back in early 2018, a handful of staff members left a well-known sandbox platform. Some of them stayed in touch afterward, and the conversations kept circling back to the same frustrations: the low quality, the lack of originality, the constant feeling that players were being treated like wallets. Every platform in the space seemed to be chasing the same formula: clone what works, slap ads on everything, and squeeze as much money out of users as possible.
Those conversations turned into a question: what if we just built something better?
That question became Meshcaid.
It Started With A Discord Called "Project M."
Before Meshcaid had a name, it had a Discord server. The team called it "Project M." while they figured things out. The actual name was decided in under two days, but they kept it under wraps early on to protect assets they hadn't yet secured. Once the name was locked in and the logo was created, it became real. Development started, and it's never stopped, 8+ years later.
By March 2018, the first logo was shared with the community. Later that year, the site went live for the first time. You couldn't even log in yet, but you could see a homepage with a note from the team, a roadmap, and a features list. It was bare bones, but it was honest. And that honesty is something we've tried to carry forward ever since.
Why No Ads
The answer is simpler than people expect.
When a platform sells ad space and banner placements to the highest bidder, the whole experience shifts. Instead of quality content rising naturally, you get a cluttered interface full of whatever someone paid the most to shove in front of you. It stops feeling like a platform and starts feeling like a billboard. Over time, that cheapens the entire experience, and users just accept it as normal. We don't think it should work that way.
Meshcaid is free-to-play and ad-free because we believe the platform should feel like a place you actually want to spend time in, not a place that's constantly trying to sell you something you didn't ask for. That means no banner ads, no pop-ups, and no incentive for us to push clickbait over quality.
Does that make monetization harder? Absolutely. We fund the platform through optional memberships and a virtual currency called Nodes. If players want to support the platform, they can. If they don't, the core experience is still there. That's the deal, and we're committed to it.
Why Quality Over Speed
We've been building Meshcaid since 2018. That's a long time for a platform that's still in alpha. We know that.
But we've watched other platforms rush to launch, cut corners on their game engines, ship half-finished features, and then wonder why players leave. We made a deliberate choice early on to build with Unreal Engine 5 and develop a proprietary backend rather than taking shortcuts. That means development takes longer. It also means what we ship is built to last.
Our marketplace has over 400 items across 16 categories at the time of writing this post. We run seasonal events throughout the year, from Easter egg hunts to Memorial Day sales to Valentine's Day quests. We have a live trading system with built-in protections against manipulation. We have community groups, forums, a newsletter, and a wiki maintained by our own players.
None of that happened overnight. All of it was built with the same mindset: do it right, or don't do it at all.
What We're Building Toward
Meshcaid is a sandbox universe. The goal has always been a platform where you can play games made by other players, build your own, customize your character, trade with others, and be part of a community that actually feels like one.
We're not there yet. We're honest about that. But every update, every event, every new item on the marketplace is a step closer. And we'd rather take those steps at our own pace than rush something out that doesn't meet the standard we've set for ourselves.
If that sounds like the kind of platform you've been looking for, we'd love for you to check it out. Create an account, explore the marketplace, join a community group, or just poke around. It's free, it's ad-free, and it's not going anywhere!
